Simple habit tracking

How It Works

Answers to common questions about logging activity, fixing mistakes, stats, groups, notes, and more.

  1. What is Tally?

Tally is a tool to help you log when and how often you do something. Whether you’re trying to do more of something (for example, meditate, exercise, or eat salad) and build a new habit, or do less of something (smoke, drink, Starbucks, fast food) and break a habit, Tally can help you gain insight and motivation.

  2. I’ve created a habit. How do I log activity?

Once you’ve added a habit and set a goal, you can start logging activity. From the main page (where your habits are listed), simply tap on the number to log a count.

  3. How do I add a custom count instead of tapping over and over?

By default, a tap on the number will add a default count. To add a custom value, go to the habit’s settings and under “Tapping on Tally adds:” select “Custom value.” Now every time you tap the number, you’ll see a popup that lets you enter a custom value.

  4. I accidentally added too many counts. How do I remove them?

    • Shake the device to undo the last count.
    • Tap on the name in the Tally box. This brings you to the detail screen where you can see stats on how you’re doing. From here you can tap any day on the calendar and add or remove counts for that habit.
  5. I forgot to add a count a few days ago. How can I add it now?

    • Swipe the screen to go forward or back in time.
    • Tap the habit name in the Tally box. This brings you to the habit detail screen where you can see stats on how you’re doing. From here you can tap any day on the calendar and add or remove counts for that habit. You can also swipe left-to-right on the main Tally list, which shows your habits from the previous day.
  6. How do I get stats on how I’m doing?

From the main page, tap the bar graph icon in the lower right corner. This opens the Summary page with stats on all your habits and goals.

  7. How do I edit, delete, or reset my habit?

Single-tap the habit name in the Tally box to open the detail area. To edit, delete, or reset your habit, tap the pencil icon in the lower left corner.

  8. Why does the habit count on some habits start at “--” instead of “0”?

If you’re trying to quit a habit, it helps to distinguish between doing something zero times and simply forgetting to log a count. If the habit count for each period started at “0,” there would be no way to tell whether you did something zero times or forgot to log your activity for that day. To turn this feature on (the default setting is off), go to Create/Edit → “Start Tally count at:” and select “Zero.”

  9. I don’t want to see all my habits at once. How can I control what I see?

If you only want to see part of your habits at once, use the filter by tapping the four dots in the top right corner of your habit list. The filter lets you choose from built-in options and custom groups. You can create custom groups and assign each habit to one. To see only habits in a particular group, tap its name in the Groups section of the filter and press “Apply filter.” To see all your habits again, choose “All” in the Groups section.

  10. What are groups for?

If you only want to see part of your habits at once and the built-in filter options are not enough, you can create custom groups from the add/edit screen of a habit by tapping “Group.” Here you can create a new group or select from an existing list. To see only habits in that group, go to the main habit list and tap the group name in the Groups section of the filter. To see all habits again, choose “All” in the Groups section.

  11. How do I delete a group?

To delete a group from the Groups screen, slide right-to-left on the group name.

  12. How do I edit or delete a group name?

To edit a group name, go to the Groups screen where you create groups, then slide left-to-right on the group name you want to edit. Slide in the other direction to delete the group.

  13. How do I add a note to a day?

On your main Tally list, tap three times on your habit and a note dialog will appear. Add your note and save. On the habit detail screen, tap the day you want to add a note to, then look for the notepad icon in the middle of the screen. Tapping it opens the note dialog as well. To see all your notes, tap the notepad icon at the bottom of the habit detail screen.

  14. What do the dots on the calendar mean?

If a day contains one or more counts, this is indicated on the calendar with a dot. If you’ve written and saved a note on a day, this is also indicated with a dot.

  15. How do I change the order my habits appear in my list?

Go to Settings. In the Sort goals by section, press Manual and then press the Set button to the right. In the Set order screen that appears, drag your habits to the order you prefer and press Save. When you return to your habit list, they will be in the order you chose.

  16. I got a new phone. How do I get my data onto my new phone?

You’ll need to back up or upload the data on your old phone to Dropbox, then restore or download that data from Dropbox onto your new phone.

    • To back up your data, go to Settings on your old phone. In the Utilities section, tap “Backup to Dropbox.”
    • Once your data has finished uploading, go to your new phone, open Settings, and tap “Restore from Dropbox.” This downloads your data onto your new phone.
    • Once the download is finished, restart the app and all your data should be on your new phone.
